Chances are, you’ve probably heard about Dance Marathon but you’ve never heard about Dance Marathon at Hopkins. Dance Marathon is a nationwide movement, involving students at over 150 schools across the country who raise money for The Children’s Miracle Network hospital in their community. Hopkins’ first ever Dance Marathon (or DM as we like to call it) was held in April 2011 and raised $4,510.57 for the kids and families at The Johns Hopkins Children’s Center (JHCC).

The question remains, what is Dance Marathon? Basically, it’s an overnight dance party where Dancers stay on their feet for the entire duration of the event through dancing, games, and other fun activities. This year will be a vamped up version of last year with some fun surprises, but there will definitely be a DJ, free food, competitions, costumes, and some fun giveaways! Dancers sign up in teams and obtain sponsorships from their friends and family who wish to support them in their goal of staying on their feet all night long. This money is then donated directly to the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, the pediatric hospital at Johns Hopkins, which strives to treat every child that crosses its threshold. The JHCC provides a high level of care to every child and performs research that advances the knowledge of childhood diseases.

This event is open to everyone, and there are a variety of ways for students on campus to get involved. The event is put on by an executive board of about twenty students who are selected (through an application process) at the beginning of the fall semester. This is a fairly large commitment as each position has it’s own responsibilities that are vital to the success of DM. Students can also apply later on in the year to be a Morale Leader. Morale Leaders are extremely energetic students who are present to help keep the spirits high during the event. Lastly, all Hopkins students are encouraged to attend the event as Dancers. No dance experience required!! Students sign up early in the spring semester, obtain sponsorships (through our super easy website), and then attend the event in April!

Why do we love Dance Marathon? If you’re on the Exec Board, you gain incredible leadership skills and get to see your hard work pay off at the end of the year. There’s a ton of great people involved and you learn to collaborate with everyone as you work towards a common goal. Morale Leaders and Dancers have the opportunity to fundraise and make a difference in the lives of the children and families at the JHCC. This fundraising culminates in a unique event where everyone celebrates the amount raised that year. It’s a fun night for a great cause!
