Life Without Sound

Part of our Hopkins Interactive duties are to assist the incoming freshmen with their move-in process. As current students, we answer all of their questions, from which dorm is the best to whether a printer is necessary or not. As the time gets closer to Orientation in August, the new class of 2016 are asking more and more questions. I remember when I was an incoming freshman myself – I had to be on top of everything. I had to know everything I needed for my room, how exactly to get to the nearest shopping mall, and where I would be able to buy food. But when I look back, I wish I didn’t stress out too much on getting ready for college. Of course, it’s important to be prepared. But, to be honest, I could have easily been prepared by getting my stuff together and making sure I had everything during the last week of summer, not the last two months.

So, to the class of 2016 – live it up!

I didn’t really get to do that before I went to college. Nor the summer of my freshman year. So this summer, I’m going to really live it up. So far…

I went to my first rave in California (featuring David Guetta and Tiesto!)

I got to visit the Golden Gate Bridge (again!).

I walked 18 miles in honor of my mom.

My boyfriend and I went out for dinner at the famous Top of the Mark (a sky lounge with wrap around views of San Francisco!).

And then I got to go back home to New Jersey for a bit to spend time with my family on the farm.

Then finally, I went back to my second home at Hopkins to move into my new apartment (and try out my new vacuum!) and take the popular course Food Politics taught by the amazing Adam Sheingate.

I went to the famous Woodberry Kitchen for the first time with my wonderful big, Anne Marie (check out the Learn More, See More, B’More episode on Woodberry Kitchen!).

And yesterday, I celebrated July 4th with my best friends and got a spectacular view of the fireworks from the Northway apartments.

So, enjoy your summer. Enjoy your last months with your family and friends. You will be away often. But you will make new friends (and those who you will soon call your “family”). Enjoy being home. Enjoy the luxury of homemade meals and your bed. You will miss home. Maybe a bit, maybe a lot. But it will soon pass. You will love the FFC. But it’s just not the same as home. You’ll be okay sleeping in a twin bed (it’s a XL for those who tower over 6 feet, so no worries). Enjoy the weather wherever you are. It’ll be different in Baltimore. Sometimes it’ll be hot. Freezing. Rainy. You will get the taste of all four seasons. Enjoy your town, because you won’t be back for awhile. But get excited for the “Greatest City in America.” You’ll see the beautiful Inner Harbor. You’ll get to explore different areas of Baltimore. And not to mention all the delicious and diverse restaurants. But most of all, enjoy summer. Enjoy some relaxation, sleep, and the anticipation of going to college. Because you will experience the best time of your life.
