Who and What is the Hopkins Insider?

4

Greetings from Baltimore and welcome to the "Hopkins Insider" blog. If you are reading this you have discovered Hopkins Interactive, our new online project that will connect you with the Johns Hopkins community in some truly exciting ways. Hopkins Interactive will become your gateway to a more personalized exploration of our University, our campus, and our students.

The Hopkins Insider blog is one part of this new endeavor – consider it a behind-the-scences look at how Admissions works at such a highly selective institution. Over the coming weeks and months, this blog will give you access into the often confusing and hidden operations of an Undergraduate Admissions office as well as provide you with a resource for asking questions. This will become your personal window into the application review process and you will become connected to the personalities that make up the Admissions selection committee.

My name is Daniel Creasy and I am one of the Admissions counselors and a member of the eleven person selection committee. I will act as your frequent host of the Hopkins Insider blog, though from time-to-time my colleagues will also join me in posting topics. Our plan is to post useful topics on a weekly basis — as a sneak preview the coming weeks will include a re-cap of the Early Decision, tips for Regular Decision applicants on how to relax once your application is in the mail, and profiles of the members of the Admissions committee. (Check back frequently!)

There is much more to Hopkins Interactive and I encourage you to explore every last detail. The student blogs are a wonderful place to start and a centerpiece of this site. A diverse group of 7 freshmen and sophomores have been blogging since the start of the semester and are so excited for you to have access to these journals. You will be introduced to student life at Hopkins in a real way, connecting with current students and following them through their day-to-day lives. Already you can read through and learn about Esther’s fear of needles – Julia’s adventures in registering for classes – Phil’s insight on people from New Jersey – Michelle’s neuroscience birthday – Rachel’s a cappella endeavors – Stefanie’s early mornings with the crew team – and Laura’s outdoor adventures. And check back after the new year as we add more student blogs and a unique "guest" blog.

Finally, we know you have tons of questions. That is why we have created the Johns Hopkins Message Boards – Click Here. Here you will be able to ask questions of the Admissions staff and current students while also getting an inside look at life at JHU – what we call a "Bird’s Eye View." As well, we know there are many myths, rumors, and misconceptions out there about Hopkins, so we created the "Dispelling the Myths" thread to get them all out on the proverbial table. Through these boards (as well as the blogs) you will get your questions answered and learn about the REAL Hopkins.

We hope you will enjoy Hopkins Interactive as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. Launch day is here…but check back frequently as there is so much more to come…

Until next time.

You’re a “frequent host”…that just sounds hilarious. Of course, college admissions isn’t like a game show, but I can imagine you using funny voices to introduce the contestants/bloggers.
Good luck (and lots of patience!) to those of you ED people waiting to hear later today!
