The Latest Thing Derived from Swing: Professor Bop

http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/katet/files/photo-73-155x190.jpg

Whenever anyone asks me “Why Hopkins?”, I always answer the people. Over the last six semesters, I’ve had the privilege of being surrounded by absolutely outstanding students and professors and incredibly helpful and flexible support staff.  Throughout this week, other Hopkins students and I will be sharing some of our favorite people. I’m going to talk about five of my favorite professors that I’ve taken classes with: two in French, two in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and one in Biology. …

A 37 Character Major

http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/katet/files/529116_10151488990735188_357608941_n-190x142.jpg

One of my best friends from home likes to tease me about my major. When introducing myself, I normally say that I’m an engineer or a chemical engineer or that I do some chemistry and biology. Charlotte always makes me say my full 37 character major. People normally look a little confused about what Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is. So, what is Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering?    I’ll start with the definition from the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChemBE) website: …

The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades

http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/katet/files/423970_10151224103675486_121261649_n-190x97.jpg

When I was in Switzerland, I showed my fall schedule to an Italian graduate student. He laughed and said, “American schools are so weird – French teaching, Applied Physical Chemistry, and Pharmokinetics.” I’ve always tried to  take a mixture of humanities, science, and engineering classes every semester. I really like having the French class as a break from my more technical classes. So, without further ado, here are my Spring 2013 classes: AS.212.334 Introduction à la littérature française II Class …

Madame Kate

http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/katet/files/IMG_24141-190x190.jpg

Last semester, every Tuesday and Thursday, I was Madame Kate. I took “Teaching French in Public Schools” where I taught French to second graders at Margaret Brent. I found about this class at open house for Hopkins when I was still in high school and decided that I definitely wanted to take it. When I signed up, I didn’t even know what to expect. I was excited to spread my love of French and learn what it was like to …

Everything I Ever Learned I Learned in Lab

http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/katet/files/315989_10150902538785486_739563306_n-141x190.jpg

I’ve been in Wirtz lab since the summer after my freshman year. It’s been a fun, enlightening, rewarding, and challenging experience, but I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. Here are some of the (nontraditional) things I’ve learned in lab: -Stand on the shoulders of giants- Ask questions. Not only will it make you understand and appreciate your work more, but it will also ensure that you’re doing your work in the most relevant and smartest way.  I know that some …

the (too many) things I carry

http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/katet/files/IMG_20791-190x190.jpg

I’m pretty sure my bag is Mary Poppins’. Sweater: I am always cold. So I always bring a sweater/blanket/Arctic winter jacket with me. Laptop: I didn’t bring my laptop with me freshman year during the day because I am an internet-a-holic and thought that bringing my computer with me would cause me to go on Facebook/Tetris/fashion blog binges in between classes instead of doing work. However, when I started doing research and got the job in admissions, I needed the …

Kate Junior

http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/katet/files/kate-really-junior-190x128.jpg

Last weekend, I was sitting at the Ask A Student table at one of the Fall Open Houses, answering questions about Hopkins, and directing lost prospective students and parents. Last weekend four years ago, as a junior in high school, I was asking questions about Hopkins, getting lost, and wanting to become best friends with my enthusiastic tour guide. On Wednesday, my dad was looking through some of the files on his computer and found the word documents that I made …

Class Envy

http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/katet/files/yay2-190x126.jpg

Every semester, I love looking at people’s schedules. It’s really cool to see the wide diversity of classes at Hopkins and I’m always sad that there isn’t more time in the day to take all the interesting classes available here. So, here’s a list of some of my friends’ classes that I wish I could have taken:   Lectures on Public Health and Well-Being in Baltimore Description: An introduction to Urban Health with Baltimore as a case study: wellbeing, nutrition, education, …

What I Learned At School Today

http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/katet/files/studying-190x97.jpg

Today, I was studying for my cell biology exam on Monday. I was reviewing all the information we already covered in 3 weeks, or 8 lectures (around 640 minutes), and I was absolutely amazed. I feel like I learn what I learned in a week in high school I learn in half a day at Hopkins. So, here’s “What I Learned At School Today” . Inspired by JHU_Tess’s Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in high school anymore, I’ve included some …

Je suis une francophile qui étudie l’ingénierie chimiste and I am a chemical engineering major who studies French

http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/katet/files/nerdy1-170x190.jpg

This week was an exciting week for me as I finally declared my french minor! {I thought it was time since I merged a French word and an English word today as I was talking to my friend about % signs and said parcentage (like par-sent-tigg) and was confused why he couldn’t understand what I was saying.} When I was deciding on schools,  not only was the strength of Chemical Engineering department and its research focuses important, but the strength …
