Hey guys, so I figured I’d give you all an update on what I am up to this summer back home in Chicago. I have a summer internship! I am officially in the real world (well kind of).

I am working at Northrop Grumman, Monday through Friday, 40 hours a week. I work in the Defensive Systems Division. I work in a bunch of different areas, but mainly with Infrared Counter Measures (IRCM). This has to do with detecting when a missile has been launched, locating the missile, and then misdirecting it with a laser so that it does not strike the fighter plane.

Sounds pretty cool, right?!

I was extremely nervous when I first started working because I was afraid that I was going to mess something up, but everyone has been very helpful in explaining everything and making sure I know what is going on. I was also really nervous because I am only going to be a sophomore, and the majority of interns are older than I am. I work with a couple of different interns; they are from University of Illinois – Champaign, Northwestern, and Stanford.

I have learned a lot from this internship, and I have actually decided in which concentration that I want to focus my studies … Aerospace Engineering!! I am a Mechanical Engineer, but now I am going to take a bunch of Aerospace courses so that I can work with these same types of programs when I graduate. So now I am a Mechanical Engineer with a concentration in Aerospace, minoring in French and Math … talk about a mouthful!!

I have really benefited from this internship. I have already made some connections for next summer for working with the European Aerospace Defense System (EADS) in Toulouse, France in either the Airbus or Astrium departments. Also, given that there is a Northrop Grumman in Baltimore, I plan on working there the summer after that. So I have basically been able to plan out my life since working here!

Besides working, I have been hanging with my friends, shopping, and working out. I have to stay in shape in the off-season so that when I get back to school, my team and I can start working out with our trainer. I am really excited for the new players that we have coming to our team. They are going to have so much fun with our team!
