Your reaction when you found out you were admitted to Hopkins?

I absolutely freaked out! I was in South Africa visiting my family, and I was at a huge family dinner when I got the e-mail. I didn’t tell anyone except my mom that I was going to be receiving the e-mail that night, so I walked away from the table and opened it in a random hallway in their house. I came back into the main room crying tears of joy, pulled my mom over to tell her the news, and suddenly the entire room knew about my news. I was freaking out, my huge extended family was freaking out, and that’s what happened when I found out I was admitted to Hopkins!

Five things every student in the Class of 2020 must bring with them?

Rainboots (the walkways flood!!), extra storage drawers to put under your bed, a Brita (or water pitcher with filter!), tons of pictures from home (or dorm decorations as you please), and extension cords!!!

What do you wish you knew before arriving on campus?

I wish I knew that it’s totally okay to be nervous! I can guarantee you that even the most confident-seeming freshman are secretly a little intimidated by the transition from high school to college.

Favorite campus tradition?

Lighting of the Quad! It is so magical and festive, and really gets the whole student body in the holiday spirit! I’m also a sucker for a cappella, and love hearing the featured groups’ holiday choices!

One thing no Hopkins student should ever leave freshman year without doing in Baltimore?

Spending a day in Hampden! There is so much to do there, and more importantly, so much to eat!

Number one piece of advice for incoming freshmen?

Don’t be afraid to go up to people you don’t know! You never know who your new friend will be, or how you will meet them. Everyone here is the “new kid”; take advantage of that!

What do you do in your free time?

Lots!! Hang out with friends, EAT (a lot.), watch Netflix, explore Baltimore, go to club meetings, see plays/shows, write blogs, and more!

Why did you come to Hopkins?

I came to Hopkins for the people. When I came to SOHOP, the admitted students overnight program, I Iearned that everyone here is extremely passionate about what they do both in and out of the classroom. Moreover, everyone is just super friendly and welcoming!

Your favorite memory since you’ve been at Hopkins?

One of my favorite memories since coming to Hopkins was going to an a cappella concert in October! It had a few a cappella groups from Hopkins and some guest groups, which was so cool to hear! I just loved sitting and enjoying the music with my friends.

Favorite academic experience thus far at Hopkins?

My favorite academic experience has been hearing from the mayor-elect of Baltimore in my Public Health Primer course. It was really interesting and motivational to hear from someone who has the capability of changing the course of Baltimore’s future, and someone who is so passionate about doing so.

Coolest under-the-radar spot on campus?

The president’s garden is gorgeous!

What were you most excited about when you were an incoming freshman?

Meeting new people!

What emoji best describes your college applications mood?
